No, it’s not turning into a dating app. But avid players of the popular game have noticed a spike in people joining a lobby looking for anyone who’s single and want to chat outside the app.
For those who don’t already know, Among Us is the popular gaming app where players are in space and there is an imposter among them (hence the title). Sometimes there are even two or three of them, depending on the game settings. Players must go around and complete tasks, which makes these people the “crewmates”. The imposter must fake tasks and pretend they’re a crewmates while going around and killing other players. Think “Werewolf” or “Mafia” but make it intergalactic. Players can call meetings to discuss situations or they can report bodies they may find lying around the map. They then vote for who they believe is the imposter. Depending on how they vote, they can make it easier or harder for the imposter to kill.
The dating aspect of it only happened quite recently. A number of people have reported on social media that they’ve seen other players asking if anyone was single and if so, did they want to talk after the game. While that does raise some red flags, not only does that make other gamers uncomfortable but that type of conversation is very inappropriate considering that’s not the proper app to be asking such things. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve seen my fair share of people asking for “cute girls” or anyone within a certain age group. Not only is it annoying but it’s extremely creepy. The majority of these people are then banned from that game lobby by the host. Who even wants to see that anyway?
InnerSloth, the game’s creator, have already stated they put something into place to ban hackers from ruining the game for other people. Perhaps they should add in something to keep people from treating the game like a place to find love? I’m no expert but there’s a time and place for everything. Asking for single Pringles on a gaming app is just beyond inappropriate.
