It’s been a hot minute since the first season of The Last of Us premiered. After a long wait and much anticipation, fans can rejoice as the second season has finally blessed our tv screens. Whether you’re a casual, first time viewer that is completely unaware of the games or you’re one of those gamers who knows what will happen, this show somehow manages to surprise us with twists and turns that tug at our heartstrings and get us in our feels.
The second season starts us off immediately by introducing the main antagonist Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) who’s mourning the death of her father that was killed by Joel. Like any antagonist, she vows to hunt Joel down and kill him to avenge her father. Fast forward five years and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is now 19. Still scrappy with a motor mouth, she seems to have a somewhat rocky relationship with Joel (Pedro Pascal). Why their relationship is like this is currently a mystery but we can only assume that something happened within the five year time period that caused them to distance themselves from each other. Also, a new type of zombie has entered the ring this season and it’s not your typical Clicker.
Being a fan of both the show and games, I’m very excited to see what new elements they add to the show whether it be new characters, plotline, etc. They did such a fantastic job last season with the added storylines that weren’t shown in the game. Not only did it give the story more depth but it also gave us a glimpse into the lives of characters that we didn’t necessarily see in the game, Drank and Bill’s story being the big one that comes to mind. It made them seem more human and I loved that so much. In a world with so many monsters, we need a reminder that these characters are still only human and still have very real human experiences despite the circumstances they live in.
Bella and Pedro are killing it once again as Ellie and Joel. In Bella’s case you can really see how much Ellie has grown (ignoring her potty mouth) over the last five years on the show’s timeline. Ellie’s now 19; she’s an adult who knows what she’s capable of, is strong and determined, and doesn’t take any crap from anyone. Pedro on the other hand gives off this insanely wise aura as Joel. Is it the longer hair? The glasses he wears when he’s reading or fixing something? I have no clue but the soft spoken presence is giving retired old man energy and I’m absolutely here for it. Love these character upgrades and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes from here.
This season is going to be so juicy. I can just feel it in my bones. Tons of action, plenty of jaw dropping moments followed by tears. I’m beyond excited to see what direction they take. Let them COOK as the kids would say these days.
The Last of Us season two is available to stream now on HBO.
