“K-Pop Demon Hunters” A Group That Slays Together, Stays Together

The Spider-verse films walked so many animated projects in the future could run. Just putting that out there to start things off. So mixing this animation style and the super popular genre of music called k-pop together is nothing short of genius. A girl group that sings and slays demons with the power of connection and togetherness (and maybe a sword or two)? It’s the perfect formula for success.

K-Pop Demon Hunters is about a South Korean girl group called Huntrix, consisting of three girls (Rumi, Mira and Zoey). But they’re not just idols that sing on stage. They’re also Hunters. Aka demon slayers. Through the power of connecting with their fans, that connection as well as their music are able to build a force field that keeps demons from entering our world. But when an unexpected force threatens their connection, they have to find a solution quickly before their world is overrun by demonic entities.

I knew as soon as the trailer dropped that this was going to be such a fun watch. Not only did it have two of my favorite things incorporated into the film (k-pop and Spider-verse-esque animation), the songs sung were actually fire. In fact I found myself downloading the entire soundtrack just after watching because the songs were so addictive (Soda Pop. IYKYK). It was surprising to see that it was more on the musical side, which personally I’m not really a fan of, but it helped that the music was catchy and it was well balanced between the musical and non musical scenes.

But I think the most important thing to point out here is the message that the film conveys. It’s about accepting yourself as a whole and not hiding your truth from the world. All three girls have something to hide from both each other and their fans but eventually overcome their insecurities through the power of music (a little cliché but still a classic). So not only does their music quite literally save their fans from demons, it saves themselves too from the guilt and shame that they carry.

If you’re looking for a fun watch with lots of action, humor and banger music, K-Pop Demon Hunters is a must-see. Available now to stream on Netflix.
