10 Halloween Films To Help Get Your Spook On

Halloween is just around the corner and for many people, it’s the perfect time to sit down and get their spook on with some films. Here are ten horror movies that feel essential to the Halloween spirit.

1. Halloween (1978)

Starting off strong with a classic. Though considered scary back in the day, most people would watch this now and laugh. But if you still get scared then that’s okay too. We all have different reactions to things. Though there are several iterations of this franchise, watching any of them is a Halloween staple during the spooky season.

2. The Conjuring (2013)

Probably one of the best supernatural movies ever. If you’re a fan of jump scares and eerie settings, this one is another must for the watchlist. And if you enjoyed the first Conjuring, you’re in for a treat: there are three more.

3. Friday the 13th (1980)

Yet another horror classic. This was the beginning of summer camp horror, which led to many other sequels as well as smaller films and games. Who doesn’t love a fictional mass murder at summer camp?

4. Halloweentown (1998)

This one’s for the kiddos and Disney adults. If horror isn’t your thing, then this film is right up your alley. Amazing costumes and makeup, bright Fall colors, I’m pretty sure we all wanted to live in Halloweentown as a kid.

5. Hocus Pocus (1993)

Another classic for the kids. Admit it, we all had a crush on the cat once he turned back into human form. Or maybe you were freaky and had a crush on the zombie guy (look it’s been a while since I saw the movie. I can’t remember all the details or names).

6. Paranormal Activity (2007)

Another iconic film that started a whole genre of found footage filmmaking (including Blair Witch Project). It feels so realistic that if it’s your first time watching, you can’t help but wonder if the family turned out okay at the end. Stellar writing and production, regardless if it was low budget.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1978)

This one isn’t for the faint of heart. There’s gore. There are disturbing scenes. But yet another iconic slasher film for the books (ignore the remake and the show on Netflix. The original movie is where it’s at).

8. Van Helsing (2004)

This one’s a guilty pleasure of mine. Every year on Halloween I break out this puppy on dvd and watch it. Every year. It’s just such a good movie despite what most people say about it. I love the story. I love the monster design, especially the werewolves. And it also helps that this is the hottest Hugh Jackman has ever been. Just go watch it. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

9. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Personally, this isn’t one I can watch over and over again but I know people that can. And I’m not saying it isn’t a good film. It just feels like a one and done for me. But again, it’s a classic during this time of year (also a classic during Christmas too). Another beautiful film to show the kids.

10. The Shining (1980)

Absolutely terrified me as a kid. There’s something about a good psychological horror that sticks with you and stays in your memory even when you’re an adult. One of Stephen King’s best works, the way it translates on screen and leaves a mark with viewers is something that should be studied.
